What are the mineral resources of Belarus there are large stocks? What lies in the depths of this Eastern European country? How to rationally develop and use mineral resources of the Republic? To answer these questions we will try in this article.

The Republic of Belarus: General features of the nature of the country

Physical geography of Belarus is characterized by a few features. This:

  • Ravninnoe territory;
  • The prevalence of poor sod-podzol and turf-bog soils;
  • Moderately continental climate with frequent winter thaws;
  • Significant wetlands (about 30 %);
  • A large number of freshwater lakes (all of them - not less than 10 thousand).

About a third of the country is covered by forests consisting mainly of oak, birch, aspen, spruce or pine. Numerous lakes and swamps of Belarus has chosen different kinds of birds. In the state reserve "Belovezhskaya Pushcha", which is known far outside the country. It is here protected by a large population of bison and recent in Europe, the plot of the relic forest.

Mineral resources of Belarus: inventory and level of development

In the Republic of Belarus there are about 4 thousand deposits of various mineral raw materials. The country is famous for its huge reserves of potassium salts. The volume of its commercial pools it occupies a leading position in Europe.

Other minerals of Belarus is rock salt, peat, and raw materials for the construction industry (granite, dolomite, chalk, limestone, etc.). There are in the country, and minor deposits of oil. Their development began in the 1960s. However, to date its domestic needs in the black gold country covers only 12-15 %.

In the depths of Belarus there are the usual, traditional gold and diamonds (according to the assumptions of some experts, geologists). However, their development and production would in any case be unprofitable due to too deeply buried to this resource.

mineral resources of Belarus

Mining and chemical raw materials: phosphates, potash and rock salt

Within the Mogilev region of the Republic explored the phosphate deposits. Here, according to geologists, is approximately 60 million tons of this raw material. In Belarus, the phosphates are presented in the form of thin plates or spread out in several layers of sand.

In the depths of the country discovered and potassium salts. The deposits of this mineral resource is concentrated in the southern part of Belarus (Starobin, October, Petrikov). Their industrial resources are estimated by geologists to be 10 billion tons, and the total (forecast) - almost 80 billion tonnes.

potash deposits

In Belarus discovered a virtually unlimited reserves of rock salt. They are in the Pripyat basin, in an area of 25 000 square kilometers. The upper Devonian deposits of rock salt formed in two layers. Extraction of the resource is conducted only in two places - at the Mozyr and Starobin deposits. Their industrial reserves of about 22 billion tons of raw materials.

Mineral materials for construction industry

Minerals used in construction, should include loam and clay, sand, gravel, pebbles, chalk, marl, limestone, granite, dolomite, felspar, marble, kaolin and other rocks. The territory of Belarus is extremely rich in these minerals.

Fusible clay distributed almost throughout the country. Until the early twentieth century they were mined even within the boundaries of Minsk. Clay of the highest quality lie within the Vitebsk region. Total reserves of fusible clays in Belarus are estimated at almost half a billion tons. About the same volume and gravel-pebble material in the country. Refractory and refractory clay occur within the Loyev and Stolin districts.

fusible clays

On the territory of Belarus is also actively mined silicate and construction sand. Their total probable reserves estimated at two billion cubic meters of raw materials. Construction Sands today is mined in 20 fields. The largest of them is near the village of Lesbiany Baranovichi district.

In the defence of the lies and the raw material for the cement industry - marl, chalk and moraine clay. In particular, Kostyukovichi district, explored the largest Deposit of cement raw materials in Europe - Kommunarsk. Based on it operates three plants. But near the city of Vitebsk is a large Deposit of dolomite.

In Belarus from the earth's interior also remove mineral pigments (dyes) that are widely used in various sectors of the economy. That white chalk, ochre, glauconite, and siderite.

The Ore minerals

In Belarus there are at least two deposits of iron ore. They are located in Korelichi and stolbtsovsky area. The iron content of the local quartzite is small and is 30 %. Mining is also quite difficult to the deep layers of it.

In the southern part of the country, as suggested by geologists, may be deposits of some nonferrous metals, in particular, native copper and chalcopyrite. In Lelchitsy district, the concentration of uranium in sediments is sufficiently large and reachesindustrial indicators (i.e., the organization of its production here can be profitable). In General, geologists continue to explore the South of the country, where the surface rocks of the crystalline shield. In their opinion, in the near future it will be possible to discover new deposits of various metallic minerals.

Fuel minerals: oil, gas, peat

The First oil well Belarus was drilled in the early 50-ies of the last century. However, the extraction of her oil was not of the highest quality. Black gold on an industrial scale began to be produced here only in the mid-1960s. Centre of Belarusian oil production was the town of Rechitsa, in the Gomel region. The oil was already higher quality. Another large oil field (Ostashkovichskoye) was opened twenty kilometers from Rechitsa.

mountain-chemical raw materials

All in All, to date, have been prospected in Belarus about five dozen oil fields. Total reserves of black gold in them are almost 90 million tons. Every year, the country extracts from his bowels about two million of this raw material.

The Belarusian oil also contains some amount of associated gas. However, its production covers only one percent of the total country's needs in this resource. Associated gas is used for electricity production on one of the TES, and goes to heating of residential houses in the settlements of Gomel region.

In the bowels of the Republic there are huge deposits of another fuel share of peat. Their total reserves amount to about 30 billion cubic meters of raw materials. Today peat in Belarus is produced in 42 fields. Most of these are located in the Polesie region.

Some promising minerals in the country

What other minerals it is promising to extract in Belarus? You can highlight a few of those:

  • Brown coal
  • Shale oil;
  • Gypsum.

On the territory of the country explored several deposits of oil shale, which lie at a depth of 600 metres. Their total reserves are estimated at eleven billion tons. Rich in Belarusian subsoil and brown coal. Large deposits of this fuel resource identified in the West of the Pripyat trough. In the same region has considerable deposits of gypsum. The total reserves of building materials are estimated by experts at 400 million tons.

rock salt reserves

The Territory of Belarus, due to the peculiarities of the geological structure, rich in underground mineral waters. Within the country identified numerous sources of sulfate, bicarbonate, magnesium and other waters.

Modern problems and peculiarities of the use of mineral resources of Belarus

At the end of 2015 the President of Republic Alexander Lukashenko held a meeting at which, in particular, discussed the status and current usage of the mineral resource base of the country. The head of state stressed that Belarus needs to reduce its dependence on foreign minerals. It is necessary to establish production of already discovered fields, as well as actively seeking new ones.

sand for construction

Belarus annually spends about $ 11 billion for the purchase of hydrocarbons from abroad. At the same time, the country imports and those minerals which in large quantities contained in the bowels of the Republic. We are talking about gravel, crushed stone, gypsum. The same situation with another important resource: with rich reserves of high-quality mineral waters, the country buys drinking water from France, Italy and other countries.

Belarus has developed a special program for the development and rational use of local mineral resources, which should fix the situation for the better.

In conclusion...

Within the country already explored about 4 thousand different fields. The most famous minerals of Belarus, which are now being actively developed - is a potash salt, oil and gas, peat, rock salt, dolomite, building sand, clay and marl.
