The city is situated on the banks of the rivers Volga and Sviyaga rivers, nearly 1,000 km South-East of Moscow. Founded in 1648 as a fortress for protection against the raids of nomadic tribes from the East. The decree about it was issued by Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich. It was called the fortress of Timber. Relocation of the Ulyanov family in Simbirsk

Parents of Vladimir Ulyanov were educated people and intelligent. In particular, father, Ilya Nikolayevich Ulyanov, graduated from physical-mathematical faculty of Kazan University, and in 1854 received the degree of candidate of mathematical Sciences. He was a successful teacher in the public schools of Penza and Nizhny Novgorod, but for ideological reasons he moved to Simbirsk. Why? The fact is that after the abolition of serfdom in 1861, Russia was swept by a wave of Europeanization and public education. All conscious teachers eager to work in this field and to contribute to the education of the common people, not only children of wealthy parents, as it was before. Ilya Nikolayevich Ulyanov was gripped by this idea. So when in Simbirsk made vacant the post of inspector of public schools, he unhesitatingly moved to a family and was appointed to this position in 1869.
