Left Bank of the Vltava river, not far from Chekhov bridge, has an amazing and somewhat even mystical history. Here at one time was located the largest in the history of the Soviet Union monument of culture. “the People of Czechoslovakia – his liberator” – so called as the sculpture, dedicated to Stalin. She stood for only 7 years, but left a bright imprint in the lives of the people.

History masterpiece

In the late 40-ies of XX century, the authorities put forward the idea: a monument to the great leader must be selected, and in a city like Prague. Czech Republic, at that time comprising a single state with Slovakia, was a socialist. This decision emphasized the expression of gratitude of its people for liberation from fascism. The monument was to reflect the greatness of Stalin and to be in such a place from where whole city is visible as on a palm. The next step was the selection of a location of the monument. It was proposed embankment between the Charles bridge and the National theater, Wielonsky station and the Letná hill. After much debate and deliberation finally decided. The monument should stand in the Summer, opposite the Chekhov bridge. The location was very good: Stalin towered over the river, and surrounded by its famous sights: Prague Castle, St. Vitus Cathedral and the house of Karel Krameria.

Prague's monument to Stalin

Hello! We are looking for talents!

Soon after the establishment of the location of the monument throughout the country was a competition among sculptors for the best project. More than 50 works were evaluated by a jury - many of them wanted to show themselves and their skills. But the best recognized project of the sculptor Otakar Shvets, who worked in collaboration with a famous at that time architect Jiri Struay. The monument consists of a whole composition: a column of people stood behind the main leader of the USSR. On the right side is the representatives of Czechoslovakia - the worker, the peasant woman, inventor and soldier. Left – representatives of the Soviet Union (worker, farmer, scientist, and soldier). This sculpture was supposed to symbolize the fraternal integrity of the two States and the unity of the leader with the proletariat. However, traditionally more stable and accurate the title is: “turn over the meat”.

First steps to the creation of the great creation

After all the formalities commenced the erection of a sculpture. For this purpose organized a collection of stone from all over Czechoslovakia. Office of the rail service was subject to a single goal: the delivery of huge boulders to the installation of the sculpture (it is, as has been clear about a city like Prague). The monument to Stalin was beginning to take shape. The ceremonial laying of the first stone took place in 1949. The first priority was building a reliable and sturdy Foundation. It took tons of granite and concrete. However, the actual construction work started only in 1952, and after three years took place the solemn opening of the sculpture in Prague. The monument to Stalin Can truly be considered the largest and most expensive sculpture created in the Soviet era. Its weight amounted to 14 000 tonnes. Its length is 22 meters, width-12, height - 15 meters. The inner content of the monument consisted of reinforced concrete constructions, which is attached to the stone of the statues, made of North-Czech granite. Just used about 240 blocks. The creation, construction and installation of the monument took about 140 million crowns.

The long-Awaited opening does not bring happiness

In 1953, dies Stalin without seeing the great monument created in his honor. The demise of the “leader of all people” caused a number of unexplained deaths, involved in the creation of the monument to the people. In the same year after Stalin dies, Gottwald, President of the Czechoslovak Republic. Was not destined to see his creation and Otakar Shvets. The fifties were difficult for Czechoslovakia: restructuring, repression, forced collectivization. All this left a heavy imprint on the family of the sculptor: in 1954 he committed suicide by his wife. And then, just before the opening of the monument, died, and Otakar.

On may 1, 1954, the monument has become affordable for people. However, the joy of the accomplished was visible. And in 1956 in Moscow, the twentieth Congress of the CPSU, Khrushchev delivered a report exposing the Stalin's personality cult. Faith in the great leader has been shaken. The mass removed of the monuments erected in honor of Joseph Stalin. Not remained aloof and Prague. The monument to Stalin in 1961 ordered to be destroyed.

The fate of the sculptures is solved!

First, the monument disappeared, the inscription “the People of Czechoslovakia – my deliverer". And some time later was announced terrible sentence: "Stalin" must be eliminated. The monument was decided to dismantle with the help of explosives. The statues and the Foundation has not caused difficulties. The main problem was the elimination of the head of Stalin. She weighed several tons. There are fears that this part of the monument could seriously damage Chekhov bridge, located below. Therefore, the team of masons it took a few weeks to turn his head in the gravel.

Then came thedemolition. The inside of the sculpture was filled with ammunition, but after the explosion it became clear that this is not enough. Suffered only facing part. In order to destroy the monument finally, it took two more explosions.

The monument to Stalin has long been demolished. But this place is still empty. A huge vault under the monument were using as storage for vegetables, which lasted almost two decades. In the early 90s here long were the first rock club, then a radio station.

It was assumed that a huge pendulum, symbolizing the inevitable passage of time, will mark the opening of the exhibition. However, the metronome left and after it. Now it is included in many tours in Prague.
