The Golden rule of ethics – to act toward others as I wish they did against us, often erroneously equate with the postulate of Immanuel Kant. Wrongly, because the German philosopher wrote not about it. Kant's categorical imperative something that expresses the moral law, the absolute “must”. It is regardless of, we want to do something or not.

Ethics of Kant-categorical imperative and the concept of Maxim

There are two types of imperatives: categorical except there are more hypothetical or conditional. It is defined as the conditional form of the decrees, in this case, the obligation of a action has a base that is the most effect – the desired (or can be). Conditional imperative draws attention to the contents and the value of the action or the action here is determined by what the action is done.

In contrast, Kant's categorical imperative – it is something obligatory in itself, the criterion by which to determine the morality of actions. The wording of it by the author is: man must act so that his actions, his actions could play a role of example to others, that is, he can only do what he would, if it did all around him.

Kant defined the Maxim as a kind of judgment, which connects the goals of man and his actions. This is a subjective view on how to behave, not so much looks, how the principles of persuasion. Kant's categorical imperative suggests that we should have only those views which will suit us, if it becomes a belief for all those around us, for society in General. In this case no value plays a particular situation – all that is in the imperative-moral.

What Kant – offer the reason, not the senses, a similar assessment of their actions can produce the mind, the heart is not able to. Although the knowledge of the outer world begins with the empirical, that is, with sensory experiences, it is incomplete. Rather, in knowing nature, this method is good enough. But to judge morally, we need something else. Since, according to the philosopher, the laws of morality cannot be deduced on the basis of own experience.

Therefore, to create scientific knowledge about morality and law as it does in the natural Sciences, it seems impossible. Here – to required using as the source of the judgments the mind.

Freedom and morality

To be truly free, one who is guided by defined standards, put some rules above temporary circumstances. Moral person is not allowed to proceed in their actions because of some conditional rules that change from situation to situation. Such a person must measure their actions and take them on the basis of the unconditional moral law, created by the mind, not restricting, but giving freedom. Kant's categorical imperative – and is such an absolute law. He's not talking about how to act in a particular situation. There is only the General idea, the concept of duty to humanity, a person has full moral freedom to do as you please – only that it is “whatever” should the moral law.

For the philosopher there is no coercion or violence in the pursuit of the imperative. Morality – something that is based on internal motivation of the person, understanding their duty, including towards the community. Therefore, Kant's categorical imperative just gives the web, while offering the freedom of the individual. Including the freedom of and from religion, and from any stereotypes in relation to the society, because this rule can apply in my life absolutely anyone.
